24-26 March 2014

Following the successful series of NIJL/EAJRS Kuzushiji workshops held in Oxford (29 June - 1 July 2011), Leuven, Zurich, Bonn, and Paris respectively, we are now planning to hold a second Oxford workshop at intermediate level, using 歴史資料 as texts. The workshop will be led by Prof Yuichiro Imanishi (Director of the National Institute of Japanese Studies), supported by Prof Koichi Watanabe (NIJL,日本近世史、アーカイブス学専門).

The goal of the workshop is to gain practical knowledge of and first-hand experience in the reading of hiragana-majiribun of the Edo period, at intermediate level.

Transportation

From Heathrow and Gatwick Airports

It is easy to get to Oxford from both London Heathrow and Gatwick airports by bus. The Airline bus goes regularly from both airports to the main Oxford bus station (Gloucester Green) and other stops in Oxford.

From within the UK

Oxford is easy to get to by train. Please see National Rail or The Trainline for travel times and to purchase tickets in advance. Please note, also, that trains to Oxford from London go from Paddington Station.

You can also travel to Oxford by bus (or "coach", as they are also known). Like the buses from the airport, these stop at various places in Oxford before arriving at Gloucester Green. Two bus lines run between Oxford and London: the Oxford Tube and the Oxford Espress. Buses from other cities are run by the companies National Express and Stagecoach.

Travel within Oxford

Oxford is a small city, but your hotel may still be some distance from the centre. There are local buses within Oxford and the surrounding area, operated by the Oxford Bus Company, that may be useful to you.
